Q What should I do if I am diagnosed with Tuberculosis (TB)?

A
For the people who are diagnosed with TB, Article 34 and 35 of the Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention Act provides the system of public responsibility to cover all necessary costs to cure TB patients. This system is applied to all TB patients regardless of nationality, status of residence, alien registration, and whether or not they are covered by public medical insurance.

【Article 34 of the Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention Law】
@ TO, DO, and all Prefectures may bear 95 percent of the necessary medical expenses, which are fixed by the Ordinance, for TB patients who reside in the local area at facilities which provide assigned medical treatments set by Article 36 (hereinafter designated "medical institution") to promote proper medical treatment of TB, if the applicable patients or guardians claim benefits. This excludes cases where said patients are capable of receiving medical treatment under the regulations of the Special Protection Act for the War Wounded. (A through C. Omitted.)

Article 35 of the Tuberculosis Prevention Law
@ TO, DO, and all Prefectures, in cases where the governor prohibits the patient to work under the regulation of Article 28 or the patient is hospitalized or ordered to be hospitalized by the governor under Article 29, will bear all medical expenses which apply in item 1 through 5 and the transportation fee to receive such treatment as described in item 6, if those patients or the guardians claim benefits. The cost for the activities, which apply to item 6 is valid only when the governor acknowledges the necessity for such activities.

The monthly expenses for examinations and medication for hospitalized patients are approximately 500,000yen; however, these patients do not have to pay these expenses. (This excludes patients whose last income tax was over 1,500,000 yen. They are asked to pay approximately 20,000 yen per month of their own medical expenses.)

For outpatients, the monthly cost is around 26,000 yen, but they must bear only 1,300 yen. (However, the cost for examinations such as urinalysis and blood test are not included, so the actual expenses are slightly higher.
